I’m a devoted Twitter user. I Twitter from my desktop, from inside Second Life, from my iPhone. I use Twitter to ask questions, keep in touch, find news stories and tech updates, and even to make dinner plans when I’m on the road. Of the technologies to cross my desk in the last year, Twitter is the most useful I’ve added to my media habits.
Lately, as it approaches a million users, there’s been some exciting conversations going on about Twitter. They’re worth a look.

- Kevin Makice, a local Bloomington tech brain extraordinare, created Twitosphere to follow local Twits

- A plant that Twitters when it needs to be watered
- The UK Guardian on how Twitter is a symptom of the blogosphere

If you’re reading this you probably Twitter. If you don’t, well go sign up. I’ll warn you that you might not see the value at first. Give it time. It will grow on you as sure as that Twittering houseplant.

I can get behind a lot of the social media finding their way out of the 2.0 bubble. RSS feeds have basically consumed my life. I check Facebook at LEAST daily, and I send more e-mails than most people I know. But I shudder to even think about starting to twitter. I do not want to give ANYONE that much access to what I’m doing at any given moment.
Especially given that potential employers are placing so much emphasis on your online presence. “Getting drunk @ So-and-so’s party” just doesn’t present a good image.
I’ll just be over here. If anyone wants to know what I’m doing, they can call my cell phone (which probably doesn’t have reception) and ask.
“Getting” Twitter at first is definitely the hard part. I have suggested using the “track [keyword]” feature to help people build up their network to the point where it’s usable almost immediately.
@Barb - I definitely post my “I am eating ___ for dinner.” type posts, but the majority of the Tweets I get/send are learning or music related, if that helps you decide to check it out or not.
Right on to Twitter’s value as feed. The business applications of that are great fun to play around with, as are the compositional possibilities in general. The embedded twitter gadget is a thing to love–and to explore in all sorts of new ways.
